Being tobacco-free
On ACA plans, tobacco is the only health-related factor that can change your price. In most states insurers can charge regular tobacco users up to 50% more. The definition covers regular use, generally four or more times a week within the past six months, so quitting moves you to the standard rate at a future enrollment once you no longer meet it. Tobacco status matters even more for life insurance, where it can multiply the price.
Life and disability insurance
Unlike health insurance, life and disability insurance are underwritten. Healthy weight, normal blood pressure and cholesterol, no tobacco and a clean driving record can earn the best rate classes, and the rate you lock in today usually stays for the life of a term policy. Being healthy is the best time to buy.

Wellness incentives and HSAs
Many employer plans offer premium discounts or HSA deposits for completing wellness activities. On the individual market, the biggest reward for good health is indirect: low users can choose an HSA-eligible plan, spend little, and let the HSA compound tax-free.

Who this fits, and who should skip it
| Good fit if | Think twice if |
|---|---|
| You recently quit or plan to quit tobacco | You expect a health habit to lower an ACA premium |
| You are shopping for life or disability insurance | You already have locked-in life coverage |
| Your employer offers wellness incentives | You only buy individual health insurance |
A real-world example
A 38-year-old quits smoking. A year later he qualifies for the non-tobacco rate on his ACA plan and, after a new life insurance exam, moves from a tobacco class to a preferred non-tobacco class on a new term policy, cutting both bills.

| What you gain | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| Tobacco-free status lowers ACA premiums in most states | Healthy habits do not lower ACA premiums beyond tobacco |
| Healthy applicants get the best life and disability rates | Life insurance rates are locked when you buy |
| Low users can build HSA savings | Wellness programs vary |
| Employer wellness programs can add incentives | You need to stay tobacco-free to keep the standard rate |

Questions people ask
Does my BMI affect my health insurance premium?
Not on ACA plans. It can affect life, disability and underwritten health products.
How long until I get the non-tobacco rate after quitting?
Under federal rules, tobacco use is defined as regular use within the past six months, so you can generally report as non-tobacco once that period has passed. State rules can differ.
Is it worth buying life insurance young?
Usually. Rates are lowest when you are young and healthy, and term rates stay level for the term.
