Free Preventive Care: Use It Even on a High-Deductible Plan

Healthy people on high-deductible plans often skip the doctor to avoid the deductible. Recommended preventive care does not count against it: in network, it is free.

Pay for the coverage you need. Build wealth with the rest.

What is covered at no cost

ACA-compliant plans must cover a list of preventive services with no copay, coinsurance or deductible when you use an in-network provider. That includes an annual wellness visit, blood pressure and cholesterol screening for many adults, recommended cancer screenings, immunizations and many women's and children's preventive services. HSA-eligible plans can also cover preventive care before the deductible.

Avoiding surprise bills

If a preventive visit turns into a problem-focused visit, part of it may be billed normally. Diagnostic tests ordered because of symptoms are not preventive. Ask the office how the visit will be coded and use in-network labs.

Why it matters for healthy people

Using preventive care keeps you healthy, catches problems early and helps keep you in the best life and disability rate classes. It is part of what you are already paying for in the premium.
