ACA plans built for low users
Bronze plans have the lowest premiums among standard metal levels, and since 2026 every Bronze Marketplace plan qualifies as HSA-eligible. Expect a Bronze plan to run roughly 20% to 25% below the benchmark Silver premium; at the 2027 national average that is about $525 a month at 35 versus $673 for benchmark Silver. Catastrophic plans can be cheaper still for people under 30 or with a hardship exemption. All of these keep full ACA protections and cover preventive care at no cost in network.
Products that price on your health
Medically underwritten plans ask health questions and can charge healthy applicants less. They include some private plans sold outside the ACA rules, short-term medical insurance where state and federal rules allow, and Farm Bureau health plans in states such as Tennessee, Texas, Iowa, Kansas, Indiana, South Dakota and Missouri. They can be meaningfully cheaper for healthy people, but they can exclude pre-existing conditions, cap benefits or decline to renew, and they do not qualify for premium tax credits.

Options for business owners and families
If you own a business with employees, a level-funded group plan is underwritten on your group's health and can refund part of the premium when claims are low. An ICHRA lets a business reimburse individual plans tax-free. Health care sharing arrangements are another alternative some families use, but they are not insurance and do not guarantee payment.

Who this fits, and who should skip it
| Good fit if | Think twice if |

| You are willing to read policy details | You qualify for a large credit already |
A real-world example
A healthy couple, both 45, pays about $1,591 a month for benchmark Silver at the 2027 national average. Their realistic choices: an HSA Bronze plan (roughly $1,241), an underwritten plan if both pass underwriting and accept its limits, or, because one spouse owns a small business with two employees, a level-funded group plan.

| What you gain | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| HSA Bronze plans keep full protections at a lower price | Lower premiums mean higher out-of-pocket costs if you get sick |
| Underwritten plans can reward excellent health | Underwritten plans can exclude conditions and cap benefits |
| Group options can return money in low-claim years | Sharing arrangements are not insurance |
| Preventive care stays free on ACA plans | Tax credits only apply to Marketplace plans |
Your next steps
- Rank your priorities: lowest premium, guaranteed coverage or both.
- Price HSA Bronze plans first; they are the safe baseline.
- Ask what underwritten and Farm Bureau options exist in your state.
- If you own a business, ask about level-funded and ICHRA options.
- Read the exclusions and benefit limits before switching away from ACA coverage.
