Straightening your teeth as an adult is common, and so is the frustration of discovering your dental plan covers braces "for dependents under 19 only." Adult orthodontic coverage does exist, but it follows its own rules.
Why many plans exclude adults
Orthodontics for adults is often considered cosmetic. Many individual plans cover it only for children, and some cover no orthodontics at all. Plans that do include adults usually do so as an add-on or in higher-tier options.
The lifetime maximum
Unlike most dental benefits, orthodontic coverage usually has a lifetime maximum — a one-time total the plan will pay toward orthodontic treatment for you, ever. It is separate from your annual maximum. Commonly it is a fixed amount in the low thousands, which covers part, not all, of a full course of treatment.
How payments usually work
- The plan pays a percentage — often around half — up to the lifetime maximum.
- Payments are frequently spread across the treatment period rather than paid at once.
- If you drop the plan mid-treatment, the remaining payments usually stop.
Does it cover clear aligners?
Many plans treat clear aligners like traditional braces for orthodontic benefits, subject to the same percentage and lifetime maximum. Direct-to-consumer aligner programs may not qualify, so confirm before you start.
Waiting periods
Orthodontic benefits commonly have a long waiting period — sometimes a year. Buying a plan right before starting treatment rarely pays off.
Other ways to pay
- HSA or FSA funds can pay for orthodontic treatment with pre-tax dollars — see using HSA and FSA money for dental work.
- Employer plans sometimes include adult orthodontics even when individual plans do not.
- In-house payment plans from orthodontists are common and often interest-free.
- Dental discount plans may offer reduced orthodontic fees — see insurance vs. discount plans.
Questions to ask before you enroll
- Does the plan cover orthodontics for adults, and at what percentage?
- What is the orthodontic lifetime maximum?
- How long is the waiting period?
- Are clear aligners covered?
- What happens if I switch plans mid-treatment?
